Overview

Acne is a common skin condition characterized by pimples spreading across areas of the skin which is commonly on the face, shoulders, back, chest, and neck. Although acne is most common among teenagers, it affects people of all ages and can cause emotional distress and scars on the skin.

Acne occurs when the skin’s follicles become plugged with oil, dead skin cells, dirt, and debris, and as a result, these pimples heal very slowly and others appear before the first are even healed. Many of our patients say acne can be an embarrassing condition that causes stress, annoyance, depression, and even scarring of the affected skin if not treated.

Acne Symptoms

Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Signs of acne can vary but here are signs of acne symptoms:

  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
  • Papules (small red bumps)
  • Pustules (small red bumps containing white or yellow pus)
  • Redness around the skin eruptions
  • Scarring of the skin
  • Crusting of skin bumps
  • Cysts

Acne Prevalence and Risk Factors

Acne is renowned to be a common skin condition which we treat every day at the London Dermatology Clinic. We notice that is common especially among teenagers and young adults, but it can affect people of all ages. Approximately more than 85% of teens experience some degree of acne, although about 30% have acne that needs treatment to prevent scarring.  The highest risk for developing acne occurs between the ages of 12 and 25, although cases are sometimes seen at younger ages and older ages.

Although girls may be more at risk of developing acne due to hormonal changes in pregnancy, monthly menstruation cycles, and with the use of oral contraceptives, boys also tend to develop acne more often. Also, family history is another major factor in acne because children of acne sufferers are at higher risk of developing it.

Acne Prevention

To end the frustration and to help prevent the permanent scarring that untreated inflamed acne can result in, here at the London Dermatology Clinic we have a variety of treatments to help acne patients and sufferers. Therefore, if you are suffering from acne we recommend that it is best to visit the skin clinic and have a consultation with a dermatologist to get the specific advice necessary for the treatment of acne. We treat each individual case separately as acne can affect patients in different ways.

We also advise patients on the best care and treatment for acne-prone skin which may require us to prescribe topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, or stronger prescription-only medicines, one of which is considered a last resort by many and has good success rates when all else fails. In terms of other treatments, which can include laser or light therapy with variable results, are simply not offered by the clinic. Our dermatologists are keen to know what you have already tried so that they can personalise a treatment plan for your needs.
