Sebaceous cysts are common skin afflictions that can occur in patients of all ages. Sebaceous cyst removal is usually not urgent but is often performed for cosmetic reasons or to prevent further complications. We specialise in cyst removal.
When to Consider Sebaceous Cyst Removal
In rare cases, sebaceous cysts may become cancerous. This requires removal, as well as a biopsy. There are other complications that could necessitate removal of a cyst, including pain, discomfort, and infection. Ruptured cysts can result in pain or infection and should be treated as soon as possible. A cyst that is inflamed or swollen can cause quite a bit of discomfort, but the inflammation is typically treated before the cyst can be removed. The most common site for sebaceous cyst removal is the face. These cysts are most often removed for cosmetic reasons and our doctors have performed hundreds of cyst removals.
Treatment and Removal Options – SAME DAY Removal Available
Sebaceous cyst removal is the most effective treatment option for both cosmetic and medical reasons. A total excision is an invasive procedure, but removes the entire cyst and eliminates its return. A minimal excision removes the cyst wall and its contents, requiring a smaller incision and minimizes the risk of scarring. This technique is preferred by many doctors and surgeons in the London Dermatology Clinic. Infected or inflamed cysts may require other treatments, such as injections or drainage, before it can be removed. Drainage is not an appropriate option in most cases as the cyst wall remains behind and will only refill again.
Minimal Scar Techniques and ‘Squeezing’ Cysts?
It is important to be aware of all the methods used for removing a cyst. Whilst other clinics employ GP’s to perform these procedures, we prefer it to be a Surgeon or Dermatologist. Some clinics will advocate methods which burst the cyst and then squeeze the contents out of your skin. Our methods remove the ENTIRE cyst intact as a ball thereby reducing risk of infection, spreading of the cyst contents and reduces the rate of recurrence – we often see patients who have had their cysts removed at other clinics only for them to reappear. We have amongst the lowest recurrence rates due to the specialist techniques our skilled team employ. Cysts can recur so it is important to choose the right method of removal to avoid disappointment later.
